Each RLX carries a 3.5L V6 engine launching it forward, capable of 310 hp and equipped with Direct Fuel Injection as well as Variable Cylinder Management to improve fuel economy and performance. The standard RLX has a rating of 272 lb-ft of torque in addition to its 310 hp, and it has earned an EPA-estimated 31 highway mpg and 20 city mpg.**
Start off with the standard 3.5L V6 and then give it two motors on the rear wheels and one for the transmission, and you’ll see what we mean about this being a whole new kind of hybrid. The power of the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD engine is 377 hp, and it even boosts the fuel economy up to an EPA-estimated 32 highway and 28 city mpg.**
You may think you want to fire on all cylinders, all the time, but the RLX knows when you don’t need all six cylinders. This fuel-sipping sports car can shut down as many as three cylinders while cruising to help conserve fuel. Don’t worry, it will fire all six up when you need the full power.
As one of the most responsive luxury sedans, the RLX is engineered to almost sense what you need from it. The Drive-by-Wire throttle features a higher level of sensitivity that adjusts based on driving conditions for an RLX that behaves as you need whether you are on the road or on a track.
With just the flick of a wrist, you can have the control that would come with a manual transmission, all while enjoying the convenience and fuel economy of an automatic transmission. You can also choose between “Drive” and “Sport” for gear shifting appropriate for everyday driving or performance driving, respectively.
Take a key safety feature of the RLX – Vehicle Stability Assist – and give it another purpose: to improve the handling of the RLX. Agile Handling Assist lets the RLX brake individual wheels to correct for any kind of over- or understeer and let you hold your line through a sharp curve.
With eight LED bulbs shining out of 16 lenses, the Acura-exclusive Jewel Eye LED headlights give the RLX a unique front end. Even when the brighter, whiter lights aren’t on, the lenses take in and reflect sunlight to give a jewel-like effect during the day as well.
The instant you shift into reverse, the RLX sends you a view of what’s behind you. You’ll see one of three different views on the in-dash display, and with the push of a button, you can change it to see top-down, standard, and wide-angle views. There’s also an available “surround-view” camera that offers 360 degrees.
It might not seem like the mirrors are a part to concern yourself with, yet every inch of the RLX points toward its excellence. When you shift into reverse, the mirrors tilt down for a better look toward the back of your car, and heating elements can switch on automatically with the rear defrost to shed fog or ice. Memory settings revert your mirrors back to where they belong if you ever hand the keys over, too.
No matter how powerful or advanced a car is, the seating is a make or break feature. Not even racing pros will want to get behind the wheel of an uncomfortable car, so the RLX has a seat that is so comfortable you might just want to sit in it when you have nowhere to go. Milano leather and heated and ventilated front seats take comfort to new heights.
Every aspect of the RLX is infused with its luxurious, powerful, elegant DNA. You can see it from the footwells to the ceiling, and the dashboard’s dual-cove instrument panel and touchscreens are integrated seamlessly with the dash, molding to its curves and looking as if they are as integral as the steering wheel or gearshift.
It can still feel a bit futuristic, but the Heads-Up Display (HUD) is a reality that makes attentive driving all the easier. Imagine being able to see relevant vehicle data without having to look away from the road. The RLX projects that data right beneath the line of sight on the front window so that you just need to glance downward and then bring your eyes back to the road.
Voice controls and an 8-inch color touchscreen let you control the standard navigation system and receive turn-by-turn directions that get you where you need to be. Real-time traffic monitoring lets the navigation route you around traffic jams and construction to help ensure you arrive on time.
Tri-zone climate control combines with the convenience of GPS to know where the sun is in relation to the RLX and estimate the amount of heat it sends into the vehicle. The RLX adjusts your climate settings automatically so that you don’t have to.
You can control more than the navigation with the RLX’s voice controls. With your hands on the wheel, you can speak one of hundreds of voice commands and have your Acura respond with music, phone calls, climate control settings, and more.
With great power comes the need for great stopping power. Even if you don’t want to tap the brakes on your RLX, you’re going to need to, and four-wheel disc brakes paired with sophisticated electronics deliver optimal braking performance. A precision-engineered braking system delivers a firm pedal feel whether braking at low speeds or on the highway.
We weren’t kidding when we said that the RLX begins with safety. The very body structure – Acura’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) design – is built with safety in mind, keeping accident energy away from occupants and actually redirecting it among all vehicles in the accident.
As a luxury sedan, the RLX makes an excellent family car, and the engineers designed it to be LATCH-compliant, quickly and safely anchoring the most common safety seat systems. To keep the little fingers safe, windows automatically retract if they sense an object in the way, and the front passenger seat features a sensor that deactivates the airbag if occupied by anyone but a full-size adult.
You should always inspect your mirrors before making a lane change, but the Acura Blind Spot Information System can help out. If it detects a vehicle in your “alert zone,” it lights up a light on the front window pillar. If it notices that you have signaled to change into that lane, it will flash the light and give you a warning sound.
Imagine if your car could stop short of a collision. The RLX has Collision Mitigation Braking that is able to detect the speed and distance of cars ahead of you with a radar sensor. If it detects that a collision is imminent, it will issue a warning and can automatically apply the brakes if it senses you haven’t acted on its warning.
Uneven wear can be the least of your worries when it comes to under-inflated tires. A full blowout could send you careening off the road or into oncoming traffic, and it can be caused by sidewall damage from driving on under-inflated tires. But the RLX Tire Pressure Monitoring System alerts you when any tires are under 75% inflated to help ensure your tires deliver the lifetime they promised you.
